With a lot still unknown regarding Brexit, we would like to take this opportunity to give you the latest advice from the Government regarding the Pet Passport Travel Scheme. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, there are significant changes to the regulations, so please read the following, as action may be required if you intend to travel after 29th March 2019.
Pet owners will still be able to travel to Europe with their pet after the UK leaves the EU, whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. However, in the event of no deal, there may be some additional steps to be able to travel with their pet to the EU.
If you are planning to travel after 29 March 2019 the Government recommends you contact us at least four months in advance to check what you need to do. Please call us on 01689 834109 to make an appointment with one of our vets.
Those wishing to travel to the EU on 30 March 2019, for example, should discuss requirements with us as soon as possible and by 28 November 2018 at the latest.
The requirements for travel include making sure that pets are effectively vaccinated against rabies before they travel. This involves having an up-to-date rabies vaccination and a blood test to demonstrate sufficient levels of rabies antibody.
The blood test would need to be carried out a minimum of 30 days after any initial rabies vaccination and a minimum of three months before their travel date. This means that pet owners will need to talk to their vet about health requirements in good time to make sure they are able to travel with their pet.
The Government has published further guidance for pet owners on its website – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-europe-after-brexit
These current guidelines are for a no-deal scenario and may well change.
While we will do our best to keep you updated regarding any changes, it is important to note that it is your responsibility to ensure your pet complies with any rule changes. Please always check the Government website for the latest updates, and check you fulfil all requirements before travelling with your pet.
